FAMAS-Award Winning Actress PARALUMAN Dies at 85

Sigrid Sophia Agatha von Giese (December 14, 1923 - April 27, 2009), better known as Paraluman, was a FAMAS-award winning Filipino actress active from the 1940s to the 1970s. She was a contemporary of the likes of Fernando Poe, Sr. and Marlene Daudén and was a major contract star of Sampaguita Pictures.

Paraluman was born in Tayabas, Quezon, of a German father and a Filipina. At her prime, she was considered as the Philippine's answer to Swedish-American actress Greta Garbo because of her perfect bone structure, svelte figure, long brown hair, hypnotic eyes, an impenetrable gaze, and a face capable of registering everything.

The young Paraluman was a movie fan. She loved reading magazines about her favorite celebrities. Her interest in showbiz increased when she learned that their next-door neighbor was the big movie star, Corazón Noble. She would often climb over the fence to catch glimpse of the actress.

Her curiosity yielded positive results because Noble’s younger sister, Lily, noticed her and soon, Paraluman became friends with Lily.

Because of her extraordinary beauty, Paraluman was recommended by Norma, another sister of Corazón, to Luis Nolasco of Filippine Films. She was only 17 at that time. Her first movie was Flores de Mayo (1940). She first used the the screen name Mina de Gracia. It was later changed to Paraluman by Fernando Poe Sr., who signed her as a full-fledged star in X’otic Films’ Paraluman (1941). This was followed by the actresses' roles in the films Bayani ng Bayan and Puting Dambana.

After World War II, she came back to cinema as a contract star of Sampaguita Pictures. She then became a famous leading lady in romantic movies, but when she made a comeback, her image was repackaged by Sampaguita Pictures owner Dr. José “Doc” Pérez. She was given character roles, playing nemesis to Gloria Romero in Hongkong Holiday, then a lame woman in Tanikalang Apoy(1959). This, however, turned to her favor because it honed her acting skills more, earning her a FAMAS Best Actress Award for the movie Sino ang maysala?.

Paraluman was also nominated four times in FAMAS: twice in 1959 for Best Actress for the movies Bobby and Anino ni Bathala, in 1972 as Best Supporting Actress for Lilet, and in 1976 as Best Supporting Actress for Mister Mo, Lover Boy Ko.

Her last movie was "Kailan Sasabihing Mahal Kita" in 1985.

Her daughter, Baby O'Brien, was a TV-commercial-model-turned-actress. Her granddaughter, Rina Reyes (O'Brien's daughter) is also an actress.

Paraluman's legendary status in Philippine showbusiness even merited her an inclusion in the lyrics of Ang Huling El Bimbo, one of the most popular songs of Filipino rock band Eraserheads.

MANNY PACQUIAO's MOTHER, DIONESIA PACQUIAO Steps on U.S. Soil for 1st Time - April 21, 2009

The no. 1 cheerleader for Team Pacquiao has landed in Los Angeles yesterday as superstar Manny Pacquiao's mom Dionesia landed on American soil for the first time mainly to cheer for his legendary son when he tangles with British icon Ricky Hatton on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Dionesia Pacquiao stepped out of the PAL flight yesterday and unto the Tom Bradley International Terminal in Los Angeles, as throngs of mediamen awaited for her arrival as if she was a celebrity herself about to step into tinseltown.

She was warmly welcome by PAL attendants on her way to Los Angeles, and a well-rested Mrs Dionesia Pacquiao came out of the plane smiling to a crowd of curious co-passengers and onlookers at the airport.

Here's a video by YouTuber komikero (comic book artist extraordinaire Gerry Alanguilan) showing us how to cook his personal version of Beef Caldereta. Although he also prefers other liver spread brand, the main yummy ingredient in his Beef Caldereta is the liver spread Liverwurst.

Liverwurst , also known as Kentucky Paté, is an anglicisation of the German Leberwurst (Dutch leverworst, Hungarian kenőmájas, Serbian dzigernjaca, Slovene jetrnica, Swedish leverkorv, Finnish maksamakkara), literally meaning "liver sausage". It is a typical sausage served in Germany, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, The Netherlands, Finland, and Sweden.

Most liverwurst varieties are spreadable. The sausage is usually made with pork. Only about 10-20% of the sausage is actually pork liver, which is enough to give it a distinctive liver taste. Other ingredients are meat, fat, and spices such as ground black pepper, marjoram, allspice, thyme, ground mustard or nutmeg. Many regions in Germany have their own recipes for liverwurst, often adding ingredients like pieces of onion or bacon. Recently more exotic additions such as cowberries and mushrooms have gained in popularity. Though the German name Kalbsleberwurst is translated as "calf liver sausage", it normally contains pigs' livers, rather than calves' livers. It also contains veal. Braunschweiger is a spreadable liver sausage that is sometimes called liverwurst, or just liver sausage, in North America.

Susan Boyle is the new Internet sensation with an uploaded video in YouTube garnering 32 million hits as of this writing. Britain's Got Talent 2009, a singing competition show in Britain showcases a 47 year old woman named Susan Boyle who auditioned and got accepted in the competition by singing Les Miserables' I Dreamed the Dream. At first the audience seemed cynical when they saw a lady, seemingly without star quality in appeal, enter the stage. They were shocked and got wowed when Susan Boyle showcased her singing talent.

The Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton press conference in Los Angeles made to look like a Hollywood movie premiere complete with red carpets, the red carpet walks, camera flickings/shutterings, lights, glamor and the attendance of big time celebrities. Marky Mark Wahlberg attended the press conference and is in full out support to Manny. Mickey Rourke, the coming-of-age actor of 'The Wrestler' also attended but doesn't know whom to support.

IMAX Movies for 2009 at SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City, PHILIPPINES

We recently saw 'Monsters vs. Aliens' in full 3D effect at the San Miguel-Coca Cola IMAX theater in SM Mall of Asia last Saturday March 28, 2009. Although the movie itself isn't quite the way I was expecting, the 3D effect is still the usual wow factor experience.

The San Miguel-Coca Cola IMAX Theater at the SM Mall of Asia is the first of its kind in the Philippines and lives up to its promise as having the ultimate 3D movie experience with its movie line-ups for the year 2009. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is shot with IMAX cameras and will be shown in June. As for the month of July is Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince. Titanic director James Cameron will have his 'Avatar' movie premiere in December with its much ballyhooed new 3D technique.



Movie piracy dampens movie ticket sales in theaters but with IMAX it's a new fun experience to take your whole family back in attendance inside the theaters.
