DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: DISNEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL & THE TWILIGHT SAGA NEW MOON

We saw 'DISNEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL' in 3D at SM Mall of Asia, Cinema 3 Digital Cinema yesterday Nov. 29, 2009 Sunday. A revisit to the timeless Charles Dickens classic...I must've seen countless version of it including Pinoy versions but this Robert Zemeckis version is innovative, artistic and fun. It's another 3D movie that attracts the whole family to see it in theaters instead of buying bootleg copies from Quiapo. The use of 3D is extraordinary, the CGI-characters' facial expressions are more refined now than those seen in previous Robert Zemeckis films such as 'Polar Express' and even 'Beowulf'.

My ratings 5 out of 5 Biscuits !



Finally, after a week in theater run, we saw THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON' at SM Mall of Asia Nov. 29, 2009 Sunday. I've read the movie reviews and they said the movie was boring. To me, well, it's quite good actually. Bella must be the luckiest human girl alive, she got a Vampire lover and a Werewolf lover! I think Frankenstein's monster will be her next lover in part 3 ! Kidding aside, it's a timeless tale of love triangle where one is the 'panakipbutas', Edward went away to Rio de Janiero thinking it will do Bella more good than harm and to fill the void of Bella's emptiness is the presence of the Hulkman Jacob Black. Chessy lines after chessy lines ensue which is a good thing, it's a nice touch away from the Vincent Price and Bela Lugosi monster flicks, and it does gave girls something to shrill on, I must have heard a dozen shrills inside the theater.

My rating is 3 out 5 Biscuits.

RESORTS WORLD MANILA Scene : Picture Taking is PROHIBITED INSIDE & OUTSIDE the Premises (Head Scratch) Duh !

We had lunch buffet (again!) at Mercado inside Resorts World Manila, my 5th time actually. I haven't had any pictures taken outside of the resort with the Resorts World logo so I got my handy Nokia N95 for some outdoors shot. Upon seeing the iconic Resorts World logo atop the still under-construction building I pose readily for some souvenir shots when the guard waved at me suggesting photoshoots aren't allowed. The hell? I am outside of your premises right? and why the restriction ? Okay, I could realize that the building is still under construction and it might prematurely be reported (and blogged) if they are behind or ahead of schedule. But I also realize that by posting photos of those unfinished construction in the internet I am also helping them by making some free commercialization of the upcoming resort. Case in point, the facebook of Resorts World Sentosa Singapore has published numerous photos of early construction work of the upcoming Universal Studios Singapore. By doing so they are attracting numerous tourist early on. Why can't we just do the same? Why restrict specially us bloggers by not taking photos ? Aren't we indirectly marketing it ? Duh !?

The guard in white waved to me suggesting picture taking is not allowed but I ignored him anyway.

Picture taking inside Mercado also not allowed since it's located just across the poker tables and slot machines. Just pretend your texting on your celphone camera and just fire away on the clicker!

There you have it folks, it is confirmed that Floyd Mayweather Sr. is suffering from Manny-Pacquiao-Envy-Syndrome. Okay, seriously, Manny Pacquiao showed negative results for 40 illegal substances via urine and blood samples by the Nevada Athletic State Comission. Floyd Mayweather, Sr. , Paulie Malignaggi and Kermit Crinton previously criticized the Pacman on using illegal substances or power-enhancing drugs. Obviously all are just hearsays and without basis. Actually the explanation for that is pure jealousy.

DCRJ on lunch buffet at Mercado's at Resorts World Manila (My 4th time) Nov. 24, 2009

Having lunch at Mercado's at the Resorts World Manila is now a habit of mine, my 4th time actually. Well, first of all lunch buffet is affordable compared to other lunch buffet in the Metro. Secondly, it's a good choice for inviting family members and friends without draining too much out of my own wallet. Thirdly, the ambiance is typically Las Vegas with the sight of numerous slot machines and poker tables. The only downside of this affordable buffet is that you tend to overeat which is not really healthy in my case. But I see to it that I get to have lots of fruits and salads, less on the meat and other carbs on the menu. The ice cream area is truly inviting with choices of 5 flavors plus a variety of toppings to satisfy your sweet cravings. I did missed out on some tasty-looking soups which my stomach capacity could no longer accomodate it. We did try out some of the slot machines after lunch but I am quite skeptic on its generosity to bestow some tokens, this is a computerized machine and quite prone to manipulation by computer-savvy personnels in my opinion. Gone are the days where you slide in coins and the actual sounds of coins coming out of the machine upon winning the correct lines. We also tried out the horse racing betting machine where you bet on a computerized horse via a touch-screen button on the monitor. We did lose two hundred bills on those machine bandits but had fun. Other areas inside the Resorts World are still under construction, it looks promising though and it's something we will be looking forward to in the near future.

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: 2012

We saw '2012' at the SM cinemas, SM Mall of Asia right after the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto also at the same cinema.



2012, directed by Roland Emmerich, is another apocalyptic destruction of planet Earth with visual destructions of popular landmarks around the globe.

First the synopsis just like any other movie reviews, the Earth's core temperature is about to burst due to the alignment of all the planets thus causing heat build-up. Maybe because of global warming? And...well, that's about it. Oh, there's those metallic arks just like in Noah's Ark except that they are made of metal. Those metallic arks were build out of big-shot billionaire's funding, 1 million euros worth plus a single ticket to be included inside the ark.

The film is lengthy with spectacular special effects. Expect just that, all CG effects goodness while character developments are incongruous making hard, at least for me, to care for them. Main characters seem to take a front seat to witness the destruction of buildings, roads, highways and all infrastructures for their convenience and for the moviegoers' convenience while they fly away on a small aircraft. The main characters always managed to escape from fireballs spewing down, road cracks, black smokes just in a nick of time. It often felt unrealistic and was obviously done for film action magnitude.

The billionaire's thick Russian accent is annoying and so is the pilot's. The film managed to include humor along with the ride but it's mawkish and not amusing. I was totally bored with its lengthy action sequences despite its amazing special effects, I was kind of hoping for more emotional impacts in character progression but it only left me with just a list of soulless characters some died and some remain alive, who cares ?

I have seen a lot of apocalyptic destruction in the movies such as Earthquake, The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day...disaster films like The Towering Inferno, Poseido Adventure...name it and I have seen it. 2012 is no exception, it's been done before and I think I'll gonna puke on this one for having seen what has already been done before.

DCRJ on watching the MANNY PACQUIAO vs. MIGUEL COTTO 'Firepower' Fight at SM Cinema

We saw Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto billed as 'Firepower' inside a cinema at the SM Mall of Asia Nov. 15, 2009, a Sunday noon. It's the next big thing in watching the fight live at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, after all, it has no commercial breaks as you see in local TV channels. A Pacquiao fight is always an event for us and a bonding time for my family and relatives, and we always get some photo-ops with the Rexona models assigned in each cinema booth giving away free Rexona deodorants...see pics below








It's incredibly amazing how so much honor was brought by Manny Pacquiao to every Filipinos. Seeing the Philippine flag with Manny's name made me prouder to be a Filipino. Introductory video sequence before the fight showed some of the historical and fire-powered fights with the likes of Hearns, Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali which suggested a prelude to another upcoming fire-powered fight. We have witnessed history-in-the-making similar to those fights in the past such as Ali-Frazier trilogy, Hearns vs. Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran. It's also like a fitting tribute to those past legends when in fact Roberto Duran was there at ringside. I recalled his 'No Mas No Mas' (no more, no more) utterance during their Sugar Ray Leonard days.

The 'Eye of the Tiger', theme song of Rocky III, was played during the entrance of Team Pacquiao. Will that be a prelude to a Manny Pacquiao and Sylvester Stallone movie ?

Manny Pacquiao did the Rope-A-Dope technique popularized by legendary Muhammad Ali not to tire Cotto out but was used by Manny to gauge the body shots of Cotto, it's also one way to get Cotto unaware which was the case, Manny retaliated with a fast right hook sending Cotto to the floor. Muhammad Ali's style of dancing around the ring was imitated by Cotto but dancing not to punch but dancing away from Manny's punches.

Manny Pacquiao incredibly demolished a much bigger and stronger opponent and still managed to perform 8 songs in a concert after the fight. It's not the size that really matter ain't it? Didn't I told you that Manny Pacquiao is the new 'Bruce Lee' ? backread my blog :) The ability to adjust to any opponent big or small is the philisophy of Bruce Lee, Manny Pacquiao has that, physiquely-wise Manny has that too, almost the same physique of Bruce Lee. Nice to know that the Philippines is back on a positive note in today's headlines, in fact the Philippines is now known as 'Manny Pacquiao country'. Congrats to the idol of the world, Manny Pacquiao. He is the first boxer to obtain 7 Titles in 7 different weight divisions.

TIME MAGAZINE Cover Parodies of FLOYD MAYWEATHER, JR. & OSCAR DE LA HOYA

Artist Ryan Quero has created Photoshop parodies on Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Oscar de la Hoya after pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao has graced the cover of the prestigious TIME magazine in its Asian edition.


Quero calls his magazine 'IT's ME', a slick play of letters on the name of renown magazine and because, he says, the boxers "appear so full of themselves."

Mayweather, who had been criticized by all and sundry for always picking an opponent that has little chance of beating him to preserve his immaculate record and by bragging himself to be filthy rich, lands on the magazine cover holding bundles of cash with the title 'The Great Hoax'.

De La Hoya, who was brutally stopped by Pacquiao in the 8th round of their Dec. 6, 2008 'dream match' encounter and who has consistently said in interviews that Pacquiao does not punch hard and that the Filipino dynamo did not hurt him, lands on the cover with a disfigured face he wore during the Pacquiao fight with a title 'Manny did not hurt me'.

Pacquiao has been hugging the headlines and got rave reviews for appearing on the cover of TIME magazine in the lead up for his megafight with WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico slated this Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. De La Hoya has predicted a win by Cotto over Pacquiao while Mayweather would be an interested bystander because the winner of the Saturday event could become his next opponent.

On the heels of his first primetime television appearance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and his recognition as a 2009 Gusi Peace Prize laureate, boxing phenom Manny Pacquiao now finds himself on the cover of TIME Magazine Asia edition as part of a five page feature story on the boxing Champion that will be included in all editions (global and US market) of the magazine hitting newsstands this weekend. With the population of Asia being the largest in the world, Pacquiao is overwhelmed with the idea of so many people seeing his face on the cover of such a prestigious magazine.

“I absolutely had no idea that when I started my career in boxing, to provide a better life for myself and my family, that I would now be where I am today and on the cover of TIME Magazine,” said Pacquiao. “A fighter’s dream is to win a world title and gain financial stability. DCRJ's Move Reviews: MICHAEL JACKSON'S THIS IS IT

Aside from the disappointing 'Patient X', another movie we saw on All Saint's Day Nov. 1, 2009 Sunday is the much awaited final curtain call movie of Michael Jackson, THIS IS IT.


THIS IS IT at SM Mall of Asia

This Is It, an extraordinary movie which features Michael Jackson's rehearsals for his supposed upcoming concert 'This Is It' at O2 Arena, London. The documentary film was collected from film footage that was taken from April to June 2009 before Michael Jackson's untimely passing.

The film revealed Michael Jackson's amazing persona, the courteous and humbleness towards his crew, dedication to his craft, the refinements to the timing and cues of his music and the love for nature.

'This Is It' shows what could have been an extraordinary concert in London with dazzling pyrotechnics, new video footage that will be incorporated to the songs, innovations, new instrumentations to the classic songs, introduction of new talents singers musicians dancers and a classic Rita Hayworth, Edward G. Robinson, Humprey Bogart sequence with Michael Jackson inserted in it. This Is It could have been one awesome concert !

The film also rejects the gossip that Michael Jackson was weak in the days before his death. The film showed the high spirited MJ with his love for life and high energy via his trademark dancing moves. Michael Jackson was in good physical condition and showed no signs of tiring and most of his back-up dancers are even half of MJ's age. Michael Jackson's Billie Jean rendition in 'This Is It' seems like he had never left the 1983 25th Motown performance, seamlessness!

'This Is It' got me teary-eyed, seeing MJ at his finest with thrilling excitement but knowing that we will no longer have something to look forward to in his future performances. It's a sad reality.

My Ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

DCRJ's Movie Reviews: YAM LARANAS' PATIENT X

We saw 'Patient X' today at Premiere cinema, SM Mall of Asia on All Saint's Day (Nov. 1, 2009 Sunday).

I really like all Filipino films to succeed at the box-office and at the same time wishing all Filipino films to make it big internationally. I was expecting a high standard from these new breed of Filipino films specially those that were directed by Yam Laranas since I was blown away by his masterpiece of a film called 'Sigaw' and thrilled by its Hollywood counterpart 'The Echo'. Regretful to say, I was disappointed with PATIENT X, Yam Laranas' immediate follow-up movie.

Dr. Lucas (Richard Gutierrez) tries to rescue a pretty self-healing-like-Wolverine Aswang named Guada (Cristine Reyes) from the clutches of a vengeful cop played by TJ Trinidad. Guada was blamed for the murder of Dr. Lucas' brother but Guada insists that it was her Aswang husband named Marcus (Elvis Gutierrez) who've done it. Marcus along with 2 aswangs tries to regain back Guada in the hospital killing and heart poking people in the process.

Yam Laranas' manages to capture some exciting visuals and borrowed some of Michael Mann's shaky camera movements but the editing was a letdown. Some dragging scenes require some strict editing to heightened a sense of urgency. Some scenes needed some deletion to deter the silliness look of an aswang particularly the Dion Ignacio scenes. We already know that beheading of an Aswang is the way to kill them, beheading them with a standard bolo is expected and that's what we get thus making the scenes bland, very typical and tiresome. It could have been innovative or some clever way to behead them to make the scenes unique. The use of the defibrillator as a weapon to ward off Aswang is clever though!

Characterizations is a letdown too. Aswangs supposed to possess incredible strength but it wasn't established in the film, the fight scenes with Dr. Lucas and Marcus was lame. The Aswangs isn't convincing particularly Dion Ignacio who overacted his facial expressions and seems self-conscious on some scenes. The Miriam Quiambao character is reluctant and helpless which is very typical of other horror films in Hollywood. I already know she will succumb before her succumbing scene. The scene was almost eerily horrific until the fallen Quiambao scene was shown twice! again it requires deletion. The Dr. Lucas character is hard to comprehend, he tried to kill Guada uncontrollably with multiple gunshots on her chest then started to care for her later.

No matter how much I wanted the film to succeed because it's a Yam Laranas film and most of all, a Pinoy film but Patient X makes it hard for me to recommend it to anyone. The storyline is too thin, the scenes needed some refinements, hard to care for the characters, predictable, not scary, not unique, tiresome storyline, bland and boring. Sorry.
