DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: INCEPTION (2010)

We saw INCEPTION (2010) at a 2D Digital Cinema (Cinema 3), SM Mall of Asia July 17, 2010.

An innovative Sci-fi film like no other done by The Dark Knight director Chritopher Nolan. Stealing one's secret is now possible by infiltrating the person's subconscious.

Enter Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) as the Extractor whose expertise is extracting information from a person's brain as far as the deepest recesses of its convolutions. Dom Cobb won't be able to do all the extractions without a 'Dream Team' hehehe. The team composed of the Point Man, an Architect and a Forger (Body shifter like Mystique from the X-Men movies).

It is also possible that you can enter one's subconscious in a dream within a dream then dream again within that dream up the 3rd dream level. The rule of thumb (in the movie) is this...time slows down with each dream level, the deeper level you go the slower the time gets. And by this rule the action scenes within each dream level is looking like 'The Matrix' !

Each dream level has its own hues for better recognition so you won't get lost. It's easy to get lost with the plot and it sometimes pay for another second or third viewing of the film, I know I will view it again once the DVD is released.

The film has the feel of a 'Mission Impossible' combined with 'Jacob's Ladder' and 'The Matrix'. Like I have said, this film is innovative like no other and requires some thinking cap. I wonder when will Pinoy moviemakers ever come up with their own movies in the likes of this smart film hehehe.

My Ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: IP MAN 2 (2010)

I saw IP MAN 2 (2010) in bootleg DVD format (Chinese version), it's the continuing story of Ip Man, grandmaster of Wing Chun martial arts, with Donnie Yen reprising the lead role.

Entertaining flick with martial arts choreography done by Sammo Hung (Bruce Lee's sparring opponent in 'Enter The Dragon' and US TV's Martial Law).

The scene where Ip Man was challenged by Kung Fu masters to allow Ip Man's martial arts teachings parallels Bruce Lee's real-life situation in Oakland, California when Lee was challenged by a 'master' for Lee to earn the right to teach non-Chinese students the martial art of Jeet Kun Do.

Ip Man's story, of course, is glorified for cinematic purposes but eventually gave us an insight on Bruce Lee's teacher.

Amusing to see little Bruce Lee (played by a look-alike kid) at the end of the film complete with Lee's cockiness. It's looks like there will be an Ip Man 3 which would focus on the Ip Man and Bruce Lee relationship. Being a die-hard Bruce Lee fanatic, I am looking and hoping for the third part soon !

My Ratings: 4.5 out of 5 Biscuits !

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: BATMAN UNDER THE RED HOOD (2010)

I just finished watching BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD (2010), a Warner Bros. animated film. I never knew that Batman had a second Robin under his tutelage. I haven't been updated with DC comics for decades ! Thanks to this animated flick now I know.

First Robin is Dick Grayson who had detached himself from the Caped Crusader and can now be seen in Teen Titans. The second Robin was known as Jason Todd who was killed by the Joker in graphic brutality in this animated flick.

A fellow who has the skills and moves of the Batman called Red Hood is up for vengeance in a crime fighting manner but without following Batman's ethical code of no killings !

The Joker is as sinister as the Joker played by the late Heath Ledger. The animation is good in the likes of an anime flick but smoother in execution.

The story could be suited in one of Christopher Nolan's Batman movie series with Christian Bale. Its dark tone theme could be darken down a bit graphically with hues of gray but what can you expect in an animated film? Yet still, it's one of the best animated films I have seen.

It's interesting to note that flashbacks in the film showed the old Batmobile, the old Robin costume as seen in the 1966 Batman TV series, old foes like the Riddler and the old Batman costume with the bat inside a yellow oval logo. It showed true to form from my childhood memories of the old Batman.

Holy molly Batman !, it's nice to be a Batman fan once again. My ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993), CHLOE (2010), 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2007), FREQUENCY (2000) & HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER (1974)

Revisited the film SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993), Steven Spielberg's masterpiece about Oskar Schindler who saved more than 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust. Schindler portrayed movingly by Liam Neeson. This is one of the three films we watched on a lazy Sunday afternoon which starred the enigmatic Liam Neeson...first was Chloe (2010) then Schindler's List (2010) then the A-Team (2010). Amazing how the pirates perfected their product from plain plastic casing to this handsome aluminum casing (see photo), best of all, it's cheap ! Schindler's List is, as always, a 5 out of 5 Biscuits for me.

We saw CHLOE (2010) on a weekend via a glorious pirated DVD from a muslim vendor in Uniwide Coastal Mall. The movie stars Amanda Seyfried in the title role with Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson. I was expecting that the film would lead to an intense climax with the likes of a 'Fatal Attraction' movie but the film is half suspense and half boring with a disappointing ending. Not recommended even with a steamy lesbian sex scene. My ratings: 1 out of 5 Biscuits !

We saw this movie on a Saturday night, July 10, 2010. It's called 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2007). I bought the glorious pirated DVD from a muslim vendor inside Emilu's, Molino, Bacoor, Cavite. The film stars Josh Harnett. A fangfest of brutality and gore. How can you defeat a group of black-eyeballed vampires in an Alaskan town plunged into darkness for 30 days? Josh Harnett knows the answer and he will show you how in this thriller of a movie in bloody proportions. Just don't mind the soulless human characters hehehe. My ratings: 4 out of 5 Biscuits !

Revisited the film FREQUENCY (2000) Firefighter Frank Sullivan (Dennis Quaid) is in the year 1969 while he talks, in real-time, to his son John Sullivan (Jim Caviezel), a cop who is in the year 1999 via an old Ham radio. Sort of a Twilight Zone time travel episode blended with thrills when father and son from different time period unravels together the crime of a serial killer. Amusing and yet moving. Moved me to tears every time I see the father and son scene (see snapshot attached). One of the best Time Travel movies I've seen. My ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

Revisited a Clint Eastwood western classic HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER (1974) in glorious pirated DVD format from the muslims of Quiapo. Clint's first western film as director. The Man with No Name from Sergio Leone's spaghetti western films, is again a man with no name only to be known as The Stranger in High Plains Drifter. It's partly supernatural and vintage western with Clint literally having the town painted red (see snapshot photo). Best western of the 1970s as 'Pale Rider' to the 80s and 'Unforgiven' to the 90s. My rating: 5 out of 5 Biscuits ! I personally think that this film was the inspiration for the Lucas Arts western game called OUTLAWS.

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: MIKE DE LEON's Film Masterpieces SISTER STELLA L (1984) & BATCH '81 (1982)

What's the L in SISTER STELLA L stand for ? I saw this 1984 film again in DVD format and the story still holds true in this generation. SISTER STELLA L, masterfully directed by Mike De Leon which starred Vilma Santos, is about a nun's wakening on the harshness and cruelties of capitalism given to the oppressed. Powerful performances by Tony Santos Sr. and Jay Ilagan. A Filipino masterpiece of a film. My ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

I just saw Mike De Leon's BATCH '81 (1982) for the umpteenth time. Bought this original DVD in a Video City store at SM Sucat. One of Director Mike De Leon's celebrated film about fraternity and its consequences. Although the film quality isn't at par with today's standard I am still in awe with its phasing, editing and camera panning. Powerful, moving and one of the best films in Philippine cinema. See this film if you haven't seen it and you'll realize how trashy most of the local films being produced today hehehe. My ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS - THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE (2010) & WORKING GIRLS (2010)

We saw THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE (2010) at the Alabang Town Center, Cinema 2 on the 4th of July 2010. Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) sets out her revenge by making a puppet out of her supposed boylet and creating an army of 'newborns'. It's time for Edward and Jabob to join forces to protect the love of their lives, Bella. Chessy dialoques/cliche (e.g. you know I'm hotter than you) and Jacob's bulging biceps and pectorals will surely shoot up hormonal levels among female and the not-so-male youths of today but some scenes drag a bit, some were poorly acted (Dakota Fanning), story focuses too much on Bella and the two lovestruck male leads, less on scope. Clearly, Eclipse is anemic and needs more blood transfusion. Likable but not the best of the saga. My ratings: 2.5 out of 5 Biscuits !

I just saw WORKING GIRLS (2010) via glorious pirated DVD from muslim vendors in Molino, Bacoor, Cavite. Ishmael Bernal must be spinning in his grave right now for making a not-so-good sequel to his beloved classic film Working Girls (1984). Jose Javier Reyes film follows the original characters' lives 26 years later now mothers to new characters portrayed by current young stars of today. The story scatters out to numerous storylines some not related to one another, it's like loose fabrics forgotten to be woven back to be satisfyingly whole. Comedienne Eugene Domingo saves the film from further damage. My ratings: 2 out of 5 Biscuits !

PALAWAN To Open Revolutionary Underwater Resort called LAST FRONTIER RESORT

Architect's perspective of the underwater room

LAST FRONTIER RESORTS, the Philippines' first giant underwater resort, will open in Calamianes Islands, Palawan, in 2013.

The resort will use submarine technology in developing and launching underwater observation platforms and 100 underwater rooms, some with panoramic underwater views.

The revolutionary project is expected to bring in $1 billion in investments spread over a 10-year period, and create direct and indirect jobs, both locally in Palawan.

Singapore-based financier Paul Monazca leads the development of the resort, reputed to be the largest of its kind in the world, using submarine technology.

The project's first phase consists of building semi-submersible satellite units called "Sea Spiders" that will serve as observation platforms, each accommodating 30 guests. The second phase, spread over the remaining seven islands of Calamianes, involves building 100 underwater rooms in partnership with an upscale boutique hotel brand. Large suite rooms will have a 270-degree panoramic underwater view, with each of the suites connected by underwater corridors. Some 85 more rooms will be built on another cluster of seven islands

NOEL CABANGON's Touching Song 'KANLUNGAN' at PRES. NOYNOY AQUINO's Inauguration - June 30, 2010

Noel Cabangon's touching song 'Kanlungan' at President Noynoy Aquino's inauguration touched hearts among thousands of Filipinos present at the Quirino Grandstand.

The song most probably established a feeling of renewed hope for the betterment of the Philippines. The video is looking like an MTV video everytime I view it.

The cameras focusing on the hopeful faces of Filipinos as if they're yearning for a brighter future then focusing the camera back to Noynoy is a nice touch. I didn't vote for Noynoy but his inauguration and his inaugural speech brought me joy and inspiration.

Great song and nice video to remember this historic event. Video courtesy of GMA-7, recorded and uploaded to YouTube by DCRJ (DAN C RIVERA JR) June 30, 2010

Kanlungan
by Noel Cabangon

Chorus:
Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon
Maibabalik ba ang kahapon?

Natatandaan mo pa ba
Nang tayong dal’wa ang unang nagkita?
Panahon ng kamusmusan
Sa piling ng mga bulaklak at halaman
Doon tayong nagsimulang
Mangarap at tumula

Natatandaan mo pa ba
Inukit kong puso sa punong mangga
At ang inalay kong gumamela
Magkahawak-kamay sa dalampasigan
Malayang tulad ng mga ibon
Ang gunita ng ating kahapon

Refrain 1:
Ang mga puno’t halaman
Ay kabiyak ng ating gunita
Sa paglipas ng panahon
Bakit kailangan ding lumisan?

[Repeat Chorus]

Ngayon ikaw ay nagbalik
At tulad ko rin ang iyong pananabik
Makita ang dating kanlungan
Tahanan ng ating tula at pangarap
Ngayon ay naglaho na
Saan hahanapin pa?

Refrain 2:
Lumilipas ang panahon
Kabiyak ng ating gunita
Ang mga puno’t halaman
Bakit kailangang lumisan?

[Repeat Chorus]
[Repeat Refrain 2]
[Repeat Chorus]

PRES. NOYNOY AQUINO DAY ONE in Malacañang Palace - June 30, 2010

NOEL CABANGON's Inspirational Song 'TUNGO SA PAGBABAGO, PARA SA PAGBABAGO' at PRES. NOYNOY AQUINO's Inauguration - June 30, 2010

Noel Cabangon's 'Tungo sa Pagbabago, Para sa Pagbabago' is truly meaningful and inspirational. I am sure his music touched a lot of the attendees on Pres. Noynoy Aquino's historical inauguration at the Quirino Grandstand in June 30, 2010. The song is Noel Cabangon's own composition. Here's the video I recorded and uploaded to my YouTube account 'DCRJPhilippines'

Tungo sa Pagbabago, Para sa Pagbabago!

Lumingon sa ‘yong pa ligid
Buksan ang mata’t isip
At iyong makikita

Kay daming batang lansangan
Bahay na nagsisiksikan
‘Di tiyak ang kinabukasan

Bakit mayayaman lang
ang lalong yumayaman
At ang karamihan
Labis ang kahirapan

Dapat na tayong lumaya sa kawalan
Iwaksi ang katiwalian
Tuloy pa rin ang laban
Tayo’y kumilos na!

Koro:
Tungo sa pagbabago
Para sa pagbabago
Ngayon na, ngayon na!

Tungo sa pagbabago
Para sa pagbabago
Bayan ko, ngayon na!

Tulay:
Ang pagbabagong nais mo sa ‘ting bayan
Sa sarili ay dapat nang simulan
Dapat ipakita na kaya nating mabuhay
Ng marangal, matapat, mapagmahal at mahusay
Kaya’t kumilos na!

(Ulitin ang Koro)
Rap:

Dagat, bundok, gubat, ilog at kapatagan
Gawing ligtas at dapat pangalagaan

Kaunlaran, kapayapaan, pagkakaisa
At wastong pamamahala sa pamahalaan

(Ulitin ang Koro)
