DCRJ's Movie Reviews : EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLE CLOSE (2011)
We saw EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE (2011). Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's screen time took less and the lead is actually 12 year old Thomas Horn as Oskar who needed to find the mystery of a key his father left behind after 9/11. I find it hard to like the character Oskar perhaps of his abrasive personality or maybe the script is a letdown. I find it hard to like the film either even with its emotion in full force. Veteran actor Max Von Sydow is the only one I get to marveled at with his tuned performance in the film while the rest is just extremely wishy-washy & incredibly tedious to watch. Don't bother with this film even if it was nominated for Best Picture this year. My ratings: 1 out of 5 Biscuits !
DAVID ARCHULETA Sings in Tagalog and Acts in TV5's NANDITO AKO TV Series
DAVID ARCHULETA acting and singing in Tagalog. The typical local flair of the storyline, a Fil-Am gets to visit his roots then falls in love, gets beaten up by a local rival, then realizes the importance of the girl he loves...as I have said, typical, been there done that kind of thing, in short predictable but with an American Idol alumnus, David Archuleta would surely give TV5 the much needed ratings in the battle of the networks (ABS-CBN and GMA-7)...in my opinion !

DCRJ's Movie Reviews : J. EDGAR (2011)
I saw J. EDGAR (2011) via glorious DVD from the muslim pirates of Quiapo. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Johnny Edgar Hoover, the gay FBI director and his man-love relationship with Clyde Tolson played convincingly by Armie Hammer (the upcoming Lone Ranger star). Insightful look at the beginning and nurturing of the FBI. The film has the Clint Eastwood (director) touch which can be felt in all of his films such as the usual slow and sentimental piano play in the beginning and end credits but the film suffered from a lack of cohesive feel, at least in my opinion. The aging make-up on the actors was overly done specially on DiCaprio and Hammer. Overall, the film is informative and insightfully entertaining. My ratings: 4 out of 5 Biscuits. The film also chronicled the Charles Lindberg baby kidnapping case which brought memories to my mind the 1976 made-for-TV film with Cliff deYoung, a dead ringer for Charles Lindberg better than Josh Lucas' portrayal as Lindberg in J. Edgar. I also remembered Anthony Hopkins as the kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann.

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: HUGO (2011)
We saw HUGO (2011) in 3D at SM Mall of Asia Feb. 18, 2012. I love Martin Scorsese movies. His films are instant classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Departed etc. Hugo is Martin Scorsese's first 3D film and this film clearly shows his love for movies. Set in 1930s Paris, Hugo (played by Asa Butterfiled - dead ringer for Elijah Wood !) needs to find a heart-shaped key that will start an automaton that he hopes will unravel a connection between him and his deceased father. Hugo then meets an eccentric old man (Ben Kingsley) in which he discovers that he is the original owner of the automaton that has something to do with the birth of cinema. The 3D visuals are a wonder to behold. Recognizable actors from Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen), Harry Potter, Beowulf (Ray Winstone) and LOTR (Christopher Lee) are there. Buster Keaton and Doc Emmett Brown (BTTF) are related to the clock dangling scene in Hugo ! This is movie magic at its best. My ratings : 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

DCRJ's Movie Reviews : STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE in 3D (1997/2012)
We saw STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE in 3D (1997/2012) at 3D Digital Theater, SM Mall of Asia, Feb. 11, 2012 Saturday. Episode I is the least of my favorite Star Wars episode. I am annoyed with the character Jar Jar Binks, I never liked the acting of Natalie Portman and Jake Lloyd, I feel that it lacks the emotional impact specially the death scene of Qui Gon Jinn with Obi-Wan and, tosay the least, I hated the story line. Now, I get to revisit the film again, this time in 3D and I was immersed with its scope and realize that it's not that bad at all knowing that certain plots in I was explained further in Episode II and III. The film was obviously converted into 3D, some background looks flat due to negligence perhaps of the conversion and some 3D head angles look overly done. Yet still, the pod race in 3D was a blast to look at and it's more immersive now than in 2D. Now that Episode I has a 3D version and soon Episodes II to VI, I think this 3D films will help sell a lot of 3DTV once these films be placed on Blu-ray discs. I rated Episode I film 3 out of 5, but with the 3D version I will rate it 3.5 out of 5 this time.

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: CHRONICLE (2012)
We saw CHRONICLE (2012) at Cinema 1, SM Mall of Asia on Feb. 4, 2012 Saturday. What if a kid with personality disorder obtained some super powers ? answer: be a super villain kid of course ! That's exactly what happened to Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan) but in a darker, disturbing and non-cartooney kind of way thanks to a smart script. The story spins out of the standard superhero origin story and dealt with a psychiatric twist on it. The film also borrowed the 'Blair Witch Project' style of video footages put together to tell a story. Engaging and entertaining film with fine acting from Dane DeHaan. Yup, not all heroes are super, some are really pissed off ! Baddest teen movie I've seen with a twist. Get your popcorns ready here. My ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !
