Japan-based Universal Entertainment Corp.'s MANILA BAY RESORTS to Rise in PAGCOR CITY in 2014

Japan-based Universal Entertainment Corp., known for its pachinko slot machines, will build the Manila Bay Resorts casino complex along Manila Bay said it aims to hire 15,000 local workers when it starts operations in 2014.

The $2-billion Manila Bay Resorts, which broke ground on Thursday Jan. 26, 2012, will have two casino hotels hosting 450 VIP and 600 luxury rooms and local and international restaurant chains. It also will feature a high-end shopping mall with over 150 stores, an indoor beach club topped with a huge glass dome and a large-scale fountain show attraction that would rival that of The Bellagio.

Another 1,000-room budget hotel will be built within the resort to attract a wider market.

According to Kazuo Okada, Universal Entertainment Corp.’s chairman, they are open to tying up with foreign or local partners for this project, particularly the shopping arcade outside the casino hotels and the residential components of the resort complex.

Manila Bay Resorts is part of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.’s (Pagcor) Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment Complex and is being developed by Universal Entertainment’s local unit, Tiger Resorts, Leisure and Entertainment Inc.

Universal Entertainment operates Wynn Resorts, a joint venture of Steve Wynn and the Aruze Group of Japan, and is the leading company in the slot machine manufacturing industry of its home country.

Aruze was dragged into the graft and corruption case of former Pagcor chairman Efraim Genuino, who allegedly used the 300 metric tons of rice the Japanese firm donated to typhoon victims in 2008 for the mayoral candidacies of his sons in Makati and Los Banos, Laguna.

Cristino Naguiat Jr., Pagcor chairman, said the Bagong Nayong Pilipino would beat Las Vegas in terms of total gaming revenues in five years.

For 2011, Macau reportedly booked $35 billion in total revenues while Singapore recorded $5 billion. Las Vegas’ total revenues were at $6 billion in the same year.

Naguiat said Pagcor's revenues for this year would grow by P6 billion to P7 billion from P36.65 billion in 2011. The state-run firm expects strong performance of its gaming tables and slot machines operations in different casinos and arcades.

It owns and operates 13 casinos nationwide under the name Casino Filipino.

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: MANILA KINGPIN: THE ASIONG SALONGA STORY (2011)

We saw MANILA KINGPIN: THE ASIONG SALONGA STORY (2011) at SM Mall of Asia Jan. 7, 2012 Saturday. Highly entertaining remake of the 1961 Joseph 'Erap' Estrada film. It stars Erap's nephew George Estregan Jr. as the anti-hero Asiong Salonga. Shot in magnificent black and white which gave me a feeling that it was really done in 1951. The flashbacks are done in sepia tone which added an artistic sense to it. Action scenes are rugged, brutal and well-choreographed giving a John Woo kind-of-flair to the sequences. Despite all of these positiveness there are obvious flaws, the timeline lacks sense of continuity jumping from year to year without the benefit of subtitled dates, some slang words like 'bossing' and 'tol (short for utol) at least for me sounded anachronistic...'bossing' became popular in the Eat Bulaga years often refered to bossing Vic, such words were never heard or used in 1951. Some haircuts doesn't blend well with the 50s period. The grand scope of Manila imagery in the 1950s is lacking. George Estregan Jr lived and breathed Asiong Salonga, he was born to play this role impressively giving his best acting so far. The Kalesa gunbattle chase is amusing and a memorable one. I want to say that this is the superior film in the Mtero Manila Film Festival but I won't since it's the only film I saw of the MMFF entries, but I've seen the other entries trailer and I can freely say that among the trailers, Manila Kingpin is the most artistically made film of all. My ratings: 4.5 out of 5 Biscuits !
