DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: MANILA KINGPIN: THE ASIONG SALONGA STORY (2011)

We saw MANILA KINGPIN: THE ASIONG SALONGA STORY (2011) at SM Mall of Asia Jan. 7, 2012 Saturday. Highly entertaining remake of the 1961 Joseph 'Erap' Estrada film. It stars Erap's nephew George Estregan Jr. as the anti-hero Asiong Salonga. Shot in magnificent black and white which gave me a feeling that it was really done in 1951. The flashbacks are done in sepia tone which added an artistic sense to it. Action scenes are rugged, brutal and well-choreographed giving a John Woo kind-of-flair to the sequences. Despite all of these positiveness there are obvious flaws, the timeline lacks sense of continuity jumping from year to year without the benefit of subtitled dates, some slang words like 'bossing' and 'tol (short for utol) at least for me sounded anachronistic...'bossing' became popular in the Eat Bulaga years often refered to bossing Vic, such words were never heard or used in 1951. Some haircuts doesn't blend well with the 50s period. The grand scope of Manila imagery in the 1950s is lacking. George Estregan Jr lived and breathed Asiong Salonga, he was born to play this role impressively giving his best acting so far. The Kalesa gunbattle chase is amusing and a memorable one. I want to say that this is the superior film in the Mtero Manila Film Festival but I won't since it's the only film I saw of the MMFF entries, but I've seen the other entries trailer and I can freely say that among the trailers, Manila Kingpin is the most artistically made film of all. My ratings: 4.5 out of 5 Biscuits !

MOA EYE - SM MALL OF ASIA's 55-Meters Giant Ferris Wheel Opens Today Dec. 16, 2011

 Funny they will charge P 200 for the TINTED cubicle for PRIVACY ( have a quickie perhaps ? LOL) on MOA's newly open giant ferris wheel called MOA EYE. P 100 for the cubicle without tints ! LOL. MOA EYE grand opening today at 4pm Dec. 16, 2011. Snapshot taken by me (DCRJ). Shown in photo below a tinted and the non-tinted cubicle !

LIGHTS PARADE at SM MALL OF ASIA - Dec. 3, 2011

I was at the SM Mall of Asia Dec. 3, 2011 and we caught the Lights Parade parade at 7pm. It reminded me of the electrical parade I saw in the U.S. particularly the one at California Disney Adventure theme park.

This Lights Parade at SM Mall of Asia adds additional flair or 'pogi points' to the mall self-regarded as 'no other mall comes close'. Also, the upcoming ferris wheel called MOA Eye at the San Miguel By The Bay area compliments it even more.

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: YAM LARANAS' THE ROAD (2011)

I saw THE ROAD (2011) directed by Yam Laranas. This is the best FILIPINO film I saw this year and it's a remarkable achievement by Yam Laranas after his lame 'Patient X' film. This horror story spans 2 decades split in 3 segments, Part I is 2008, part II is 1998 and part III is 1988. Each segment has a different story which interconnects in the climax. A supernatural mix blended with police investigative work. The anticlimax is one memorable sequence. The director's use of lights and shadows gave an atmospheric sense of creepiness. The editing and the cinematography are outstanding. Carmina Villaroel is the standout in the cast, she qualms up every scene as the domineering mother. Barbie Forteza and Rhian Ramos played their part well, Alden Ricards played the memorable psycho killer in a Norman Bates kind of portrayal giving one of the finest performances. Highly recommended film, be warned that this is rated R-13, meaning those below 13 are not allowed inside, that's why I was left to see the film alone while my family went to see 'Won't Last A Day Without You'. Don't fail to watch this fine Filipino flick, in theaters ! not the pirated DVD please. My ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits ! Yam Laranas is back on track here, a good compilation of work including 'Sigaw' and 'The Echo' just forget about 'Patient X' ...LOL !!

DCRJ's MOVIE REVIEWS: THE ADVENTURES OF TIN TIN : SECRET OF THE UNICORN (2011)

We saw THE ADVENTURES OF TIN TIN : SECRET OF THE UNICORN (2011) at Cinema 4, 3D Digital Theater at SM Mall of Asia, Nov. 30, 2011 Thursday. An old-fashioned adventure flick with plenty of Steven Spielberg's signature stamped all over. Also a dazzling motion capture flick uncannily combined with top-of-the-line CG animation. The film reminded me of the Indiana Jones movies with elements of Pirates of the Caribbean. Top-notch motion-capture performance by Andy Serkis, the actor behind such memorable characters like Gollum (Lord of the Rings), King Kong by Peter Jackson and Caesar (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Great fun in this thrill ride of an adventure. My ratings: 5 out of 5 Biscuits !
