DCRJ's Movie Review : THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON starring BRAD PITT & CATE BLANCHETT

We saw the film 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at the Cinema 4 of the SM Mall of Asia on January 11, 2009 Sunday.

What I really like about this movie is that the story didn't involved medical experts spending time on research and cure or a scientific experiment on the medical case of Benjamin Button (played by Brad Pitt).

The film 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' is about a man who was born an old man (old baby?), grows younger and younger until he aged as an infant later. Sounds confusing? it's a Twilight Zone sort of thing and that's the premise of the story but the characters didn't focused on shocks and surprises about Benjamin getting younger and younger as he ages, they just accepted that fact as Benjamin goes thru life like everybody else.

Photobucket
Also, the curious case of this poster. Those who haven't seen the movie would call this poster a case of mistakenly printing the letters backwards.

What's very likable about this film is that Benjamin Button worries about the consequence of growing younger in later part of his life just like all of us who worries about getting old in later part of our lives. What's amusing about this film is that it is also a coming-of-age film with the character, a grandfather-looking man who tried sex and drank alcohol all for the first time.

The story has an epic feel to it involving numerous decades with historical events chronicling the life of the characters. I can truly say that this film is like The Twilight Zone meets Forest Gump !

The film also has the feel of a quality production with subtle details you would truly admire and be inspired specially if you wanted to be a film director. The period costumes are a spectacle to behold. The film also has this classic-film feel to it just like the Golden years of Hollywood.

Amazing are the subtleties of the computer generated effects not only on some cinematic scenes but on Brad Pitt's aged physique as well (also of Cate Blanchett). Having an old-man-make-up is one thing but having the body of an old man is another, you can clearly see the arthrtic formed fingers, the crooked body of an old man with osteoporosis, the age spots, the cataracts too! if you look closely.

Photobucket

Acting wise, Brad Pitt is simply spectacular...forget about his good looking image, look at Brad Pitt's portrayal of Benjamin Button and you could simply be blown away with his touching performance. Cate Blanchett is a marvel to look at. Cate, like Pitt, could possibly be nominated for an Oscar with their performances. Go watch the movie in theaters, you'll miss out a lot if watched on a TV via your bootlegged DVD copy.

Photobucket

One strong movie reference (I think) in the Benjamin Button is 'The Graduate', I don't know if that was an intention of the writers when an old Cate Blanchett, after having sex with a younger Brad Pitt in the movie, uttered the line 'goodbye, Benjamin' which automatically registered in my memories of an old Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson saying a 'goodbye, Benjamin' to a young Dusin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock from 'The Graduate' :)

The film 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls' registered into my mind when a scene in the Benjamin Button movie shows a young Cate Blanchett who wanted to see Russia. Cate Blanchett played a Russian baddie in the Indiana Jones 4 ! and also, Frank Marshalll and Kathleen Kennedy are the producers of Benjamin Button and Indiana Jones 4 ! Geez, I must've seen a million movies by now hahaha

My Ratings : 5 out of 5 Biscuits !

All-New Season of ANTHONY BOURDAIN : NO RESERVATIONS Starting January 5, 2009 includes the PHILIPPINES Episode

Well I can't hardly wait for the No Reservations featuring the Philippines. All I could find is the All-New Season No Reservations commercial at YouTube.

I think the Philippine episode will be shown later part of January 2009.

In case you live under a rock, Mr. Anthony Bourdain is a celebrity chef who has his own show in Travel & Living channel in Asia (Travel Channel in North America) called No Reservations which features Mr. Bourdain tasting culinary dishes (and bizarre foods like what Andrew Zimmern has tasted) from around the world.

Before, most Filipino fans of Mr. Bourdain were getting impatient (including me) and were asking why hasn't he visited the Philippines yet during earlier runs of A Cook's Tour and No Reservations, now he has visited the Philippines last October 2008 and all of his Pinoy fans are eagerly waiting that episode. I am glad he didn't made a balut segment, as Mr. Bourdain said 'that is so last week' (he tasted Balut in Vietnam of all places !)

Here's a commercial of the All-New Season of No Reservations to whet your appetite on the Philippines episode.

PAGCOR CITY ENTERTAINMENT CITY or Bagong Nayong Pilipino-Manila Bay Tourism City Construction Begins JANUARY 2009

PAGCOR City is the name of a Las Vegas-like gaming and entertainment complex that PAGCOR is proposes to build on 8 km² of land on the reclamation area of Manila Bay, Philippines. The cost of the project will be $15 billion , which is scaled down from the more recent $20 billion budget announcement that had been previously announced in 2007. All investments will come from private companies. The project has recently been renamed "Bagong Nayong Pilipino-Manila Bay Tourism City", but is called several different names by the press. Currently, the most common name being referenced is "Manila Bay Tourism City".

I just hope THE Universal Studios would be put up on the project. It's high time that the Philippines have its own entertainment complex that rivals the very best of Macau or a Las Vegas. Let the games begin !

THE RING Magazine : On The Cover: MANNY PACQUIAO - 2008 FIGHTER OF THE YEAR - YEAR-END AWARD ISSUE

The Ring Magazine front cover issue for the year-ender is none other than Boxing Superstar and Pound-for-pound MANNY 'Pacman' PACQUIAO as Fighter of the Year. Article on the Pacman was said to be unbias (this time around) despite the fact that the Ring Magazine is owned by Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya

Photobucket

The 8th round stoppage of the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya plus Pacquiao’s other two victories in 2008 – his March 15 split-decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in their instant classic rematch and his June 28 ninth-round TKO of David Diaz unanimously voted Manny Pacquiao as the 2008 Fighter of the Year

The version of Pacquiao that won junior lightweight and lightweight titles this year was not the same little ball of fire that won flyweight and junior featherweight belts. He’s still relentless but he’s no longer reckless. He doesn’t gamble in the ring anymore, he takes calculated risks.

In other words, Pacquiao still has heart, but he’s added brain to his game.

Photobucket
Fans and media can argue about the verdict of Pacquiao’s narrow points win over Marquez, but what can’t be debated is that he actually boxed with the Mexican technician. Pacquiao was able to time, feint and counter-punch a master counter-puncher.

Diaz could have been described as the “weakest link” among lightweight titleholders when Pacquiao challenged him. He could even be dismissed as “limited” or “one-dimensional." But nobody can deny that the Chicagoan is as tough as they come.

And nobody can deny that Pacquiao punished Diaz more than any of the once-beaten ’96 U.S. Olympian’s previous 36 foes had. But Pacquiao didn’t merely bludgeon Diaz into submission, he out-classed the gutsy pressure fighter in every conceivable way – controlling the pace and distance with his footwork while setting up his power-punch combinations with impeccable timing.

Pacquiao did the same thing to De La Hoya, but he had to follow a strict strategy in order to pull it off and he did so with the confidence and fluidity of a natural-born boxer.

MANNY PACQUIAO's New Bouncing Baby Girl named QUEEN ELIZABETH PACQUIAO Born in the U.S.A. - Video Dec. 31, 2008

Here's a video from 24 Oras featuring Manny Pacquiao's bouncing baby girl born in the U.S. named Queen Elizabeth. That's an unusual name for a girl of Filipino descent, well it's a sounding name of royalty in the monarchy of England. Incidentally, the name Queen Elizabeth coincides with the Pacman's next bout with Ricky Hatton who is pure British.
