DCRJ's Movie Reviews : SIGAW
Movie Review Date: October 6 2007
Oh man, I missed this one when it was released in December 2004. The film stars Richard Gutierrez, Angel Locsin, Iza Calzado, Jomari Yllana, Ronnie Lazaro and newcomer Ella Guevarra (GMA's Starstruck Kid winner).
Never mind the celebrity stars, the story revolves around a jealous police officer who brutally beats up his wife and daughter in an old apartment building. Marvin (Richard Gutierrez) is their next door neighbor who spends sleepless nights due to the constant commotion next door. The beatened wife Anna (Iza Calzado) usually ask for help of her next door neighbor Jude (James Blanco) for refuge of her daughter Lara (Ella Guevarra). Marvin complains at the building's caretaker (Ronnie Lazaro) and was told in return not to mind the noises. The beatings became violent and Marvin was able to witness the brutality down the hallway...or so it seems. Marvin uncovers a secret that would involve his girlfriend Pinky (Angel Locsin, pre-ABS-CBN days) and moves the story to a shocking revelation.
The use of light and shadow along with masterful camera work by director Yam Laranas made the Pinoy film a disturbingly horrific, rich, artistic and quality product.
This film got rave reviews abroad and was chosen by a Hollywood company which was remade as an American version entitled THE ECHO which incidentally also starred Iza Calzado as the beatened wife and directed by the same director Yam Laranas....will be release in 2008. Yam Laranas was considered as the first Pinoy to direct a major Hollywood film. The Hollywood film company is also the same company behind the American version of the Japanese films THE RING and THE GRUDGE. This is also the reason why I rented the VCD 'Sigaw' today because I haven't seen it in the first place thus the late review of this 2004 flick.
Here's hoping for the film THE ECHO ( to be release in 2008) to be a box office success on par with THE RING. It's high time that the PINOY filmakers finally be recognise for its ingenuity and craftsmanship....move over John Woo/Ang Lee, the PINOYS are COMING !
Rating : 5/5 BISCUITS
