MANNY PACQUIAO vs. RICKY HATTON on May 2, 2009 - Let the Fireworks Begin, HAPPY NEW YEAR !

It isn’t signed, sealed and delivered yet but all signs point to a May 2 clash in Las Vegas between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton of England.

"As far as I’m concerned, it’s done," Top Rank head Bob Arum told the Bulletin yesterday, moments after the Hall of Fame promoter met with Pacquiao, lawyer Franklin Gacal and chief trainer Freddie Roach over dinner in Los Angeles.

Arum said either the Thomas and Mack Center, which seats 19,000, or the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which can accommodate more than 15,000, will play host to the scheduled 12-round bout at super-lightweight/junior-welterweight (140 lbs).

Arum personally went to Tinseltown to discuss the matter with the 30-year-old Filipino pound-for-pound king to ensure that he knows where Team Pacquiao stands.

"I have been talking with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) about this fight and it’s just about done," said Arum, who has come back from a week-long vacation in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.

GBP, which is owned by Oscar De La Hoya and whose operations is handled by Richard Schaefer, has promotional rights over the rugged Hatton, whose devil-may-care attitude on top of the ring is said to be custom-made for Pacquiao.

"Ninety percent (done)," Gacal said, stressing that everyone on the team wants the fight to happen.

Gacal said a deal should be finalized soon as he has been given the authority by Pacquiao to work out some of the minor concerns.

It could not be determined what will be the revenue-sharing scheme although it is safe to say that Pacquiao gets the bigger and chunkier piece of the pie since he currently represents the sport of boxing.

Pacquiao settled for the smaller piece of the pie when he agreed to battle De La Hoya early this month since it is the Golden Boy – and not himself – is the main attraction.

But things are a whole lot different now and Team Pacquiao is very much aware of Pacquiao’s full earning potential.

Pacquiao should be back in the country on Jan. 10 after the birth of Jinkee’s fourth child on New Year’s Day.

But it will not take long before Pacquiao heads back to Los Angeles to begin training camp as he will have to be there in the last week of February for a three-city press tour.

"New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles (will be the stops)," said Gacal.

After the whirlwind promotional tour, Pacquiao will show up at the Wild Card Boxing Club for training camp proper.

DCRJ's Movie Review - DAYO : SA MUNDO NG ELEMENTALIA

Ah, nice to be back. After week long vacation we still found time to watch 'Dayo' last Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia. Here's a my review of the film:

Here's an animated film I can truly relate due to familiarity on all Philippine culture. The huge wooden spoon and fork are there as well as the image of Christ's Last Supper and the Philippine mythical creatures, the giant billboards of EDSA, sari-sari stores, typical Philippine houses, Philippine Airlines plane and the SM Mall of Asia with its fireworks.

The story centers on Bubuy's determination to save his grandparents abducted by mythical creatures from an enchanted land called Elementalia, with the help of a cute manananggal named Anna and a self-admiring Tikbalang named Narsi (as in narcissism, get it?).

The animation uses the same 2D and 3D techniques used by animators abroad. The Dayo animation is a a wonder to behold for a locally produced film yet still, overall, it felt like a cartoon network episode and the film is light years away from the smooth flowing animation of a hand-drawn-on-paper work from Disney classic animated film of the 1940s. Despite of that, the animation still manages to give an emotional impact specially during a moving scene when Bubuy cried over his grandparents' motionless bodies. Overall, it makes me proud and appreciate the Pinoy talents who have given their creativity for the whole Philippines to cherish and hopefully for the whole world. Kudos to the Dayo team, Robert Quilao and Eric Cabahug etc.

The fine addition of Lea Salonga singing the 'Lipad' theme song moved the film several notches up. Lea Salonga's voice gave the film a Walt Disney feel to it and brought thoughts of her singing stint in Walt Disney classics such as Mulan and Aladdin. I was waiting for the song 'Kapit' by Moymoy & Roadfill at the end credits when the songs were changed to a Christmas melody by the bozo assigned at the screen projector room of Cinema 1 at the SM Mall of Asia...geez!

I've heard that the the Dayo team will prepare for 'Dayo 2'...yippie ! and the DVD will be released next year...count me in to buy the original copy. Don't buy pirated copies please.

I hope 'Dayo' did made a lot of money and still making more at the box office. Only 4 of us were watching the film at the orchestra section of Cinema 1 although the Premiere section was full.

BTW, DAYO won awards at the concluded 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival
Best Sound: Albert Idioma and Wally Dellosa
Best Visual Effects: Robert Quilao
Best Musical Score: Jessie Lazatin
Best Theme Song: Lipad by Jessie Lasaten and Artemio Abad Jr., performed by Lea Salonga

Here's a video featuring the casts and characters of Dayo

Here's a video featuring Lea Salonga singing 'Lipad' with a full orchestra conducted by her brother Gerard Salonga...Lea Salonga's rendition of the song is truly magical, it gives the film 'Dayo' an essence of a Walt Disney flick similar to Aladdin and Mulan where Lea Salonga also sang in the soundtrack.
