John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman was denied parole for the 5th time on Tuesday August 12, 2008. New York State Division of Parole said in a statement that Mark David Chapman's parole request was denied for safety concerns on him and on the public.

John Lennon's wife Yoko Ono fears for the lives of their two sons once Mark Chapman was released from prison, she also fears for Chapman's life because of the hatred among Lennon's fans.

Mark Chapman is currently serving 20 year to life imprisonment for the murder of former Beatle John Lennon at the Dakota apartment building (photo insert) on December 8, 1980.

Although having a clean record since October 1994, Chapman said during an interview that he “planned and executed ‘the premeditated slaying of John Lennon with an essentially clear mind.’” Chapman serving prison time at Attica prison in New York, was also denied parole in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006. His next attempt to apply for parole will be in 2010.

Mark Chapman is housed in an isolated facility away from other prisoners in order to ensure his safety in the facility. He serves as a porter, cleans administrative quarters, and assists other inmates with research in a small law library separate from the prison.

December 8, 2008 around 10:49pm, Mark Chapman shook hands with John Lennon and and held out a copy of Lennon's new album, Double Fantasy, for him to sign near Lennon's Dakota apartment.
